The A4988 Stepper Motor Driver is a comprehensive micro-stepping motor driver featuring a built-in converter, ensuring straightforward operation. Operating within a voltage range of 8 V to 35 V, it can deliver approximately 1 A per phase without the need for a heat sink or forced air flow. With sufficient additional cooling, it’s rated for 2 A per coil.
This driver incorporates a fixed off-time current regulator, offering the flexibility of slow or mixed decay modes. The converter plays a pivotal role in facilitating the seamless integration of the A4988.
Unlike some drivers, there’s no requirement for phase sequence tables or complex high-frequency control interface programming. This makes the A4988 ideal for scenarios where a sophisticated microprocessor isn’t available or is overloaded. During stepping operations, the chopping control within the A4988 automatically selects the current decay mode, enhancing step accuracy while minimizing audible motor noise and reducing power consumption.
Furthermore, internal synchronous rectification control circuitry is provided to optimize pulse width modulation (PWM) power consumption during operation.
The A4988 is equipped with internal circuit protection mechanisms, including thermal shutdown with hysteresis, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and crossover current protection. It doesn’t necessitate special power-up sequencing.
Packaged in a surface mount QFN package (ES) measuring 5 mm × 5 mm, with a nominal overall package height of 0.90 mm, it also features an exposed thermal pad to enhance heat dissipation capabilities.
