Setting Up a Power Electronics Lab

A power electronics lab differs from a general electronics lab in several ways: higher voltages (up to 400V+ for inverter work), higher currents (up to 50A+ for battery and motor testing), thermal management concerns, and more serious safety requirements. The equipment list reflects these needs.

Essential Equipment List

Equipment Purpose Budget (Rs.) Mid-Range (Rs.)
Digital multimeter V, I, R measurement 500-1,500 3,000-8,000
DC power supply (30V/5A) Testing circuits 2,000-5,000 8,000-20,000
Oscilloscope (50MHz+) Waveform analysis 3,000-8,000 (DSO138) 15,000-40,000 (Rigol)
Soldering station PCB assembly 800-2,000 3,000-8,000
Electronic load Battery/PSU testing 1,500-3,000 5,000-15,000
Clamp meter Non-contact current 500-1,500 3,000-8,000
Watt meter (inline) Power measurement 300-800 2,000-5,000
Spot welder Battery pack building 3,000-5,000 (DIY) 8,000-25,000
Heat gun Heat shrink, desoldering 500-1,500 2,000-5,000
Thermal camera/sensor Heat analysis 200-500 (NTC+Arduino) 5,000-20,000 (FLIR)

Budget vs Mid-Range vs Professional

Budget lab (Rs.15,000-25,000): Sufficient for student projects, Arduino-based power circuits, and small battery packs. Digital multimeter + USB oscilloscope + basic soldering iron + watt meter + breadboard power supply.

Mid-range lab (Rs.50,000-1,00,000): For serious hobbyists and small product development. Bench power supply + 4-channel DSO + temperature-controlled soldering station + electronic load + spot welder.

Professional lab (Rs.2,00,000+): Product development and research. Programmable power supply + high-bandwidth DSO + power analyser + thermal imaging + EIS equipment.

Hand Tools and Consumables

  • Wire strippers and crimping tools: Rs.300-1,000
  • Silicone wire set (10-22AWG): Rs.500-1,500
  • Heat shrink assortment: Rs.200-500
  • Kapton tape: Rs.100-300
  • Fish paper/barley paper: Rs.100-300
  • Nickel strip for spot welding: Rs.200-500
  • Solder wire (60/40 or lead-free): Rs.200-500
  • Flux paste: Rs.100-200
  • Isopropyl alcohol: Rs.100-200
  • Safety glasses: Rs.100-300
  • ESD wrist strap: Rs.50-200

Safety Equipment

  • Fire extinguisher: CO2 type for electrical fires. Rs.1,000-2,000. Mount within arm’s reach of the workbench.
  • First aid kit: Burns cream, bandages, eyewash. Rs.300-500.
  • Safety glasses: Mandatory when soldering, spot welding, or working with batteries. Rs.100-300.
  • Fire-retardant mat: Silicone soldering mat for the workbench. Rs.500-1,500.
  • LiPo safety bag: For charging and storing lithium batteries during testing. Rs.200-500.
  • Smoke detector: Install above the workbench. Rs.300-800.

FAQ

What is the single most important piece of equipment to buy first?

A quality digital multimeter. It is used in every single project and measurement. Invest Rs.3,000-8,000 in a Fluke 15B+ or UNI-T UT61E — they will last 10+ years and give reliable readings that budget meters cannot match.

Can I use a phone oscilloscope app instead of a real DSO?

Phone-based oscilloscopes (using the audio jack) are limited to audio frequencies (<20kHz) and low voltages. Power electronics operates at 20-500kHz switching frequencies with high voltages. A proper DSO (even a Rs.3,000 DSO138 kit) is essential for any switching converter work.

Where do Indian students buy lab equipment?

Amazon India, Robu.in, Zbotic, and AliExpress for modules and components. For instruments, check Amazon, IndiaMart (for bulk/institutional), and SP Road Bangalore / Lamington Road Mumbai for physical electronics markets.
