What MJF Nylon is good at

Multi Jet Fusion prints into a heated bed of nylon powder, jetting a fusing agent where the part should be and fusing the whole layer at once. Because the surrounding powder holds everything up, there are no supports to remove — interlocking assemblies, internal channels and lattices come out clean, and there are no witness marks anywhere on the part. It is the lane we point people to when a plastic part has to survive real use rather than just look right.

Materials you can order

Every grade below is quotable today. If you are not sure which one fits, put your file through the quote page and ask us — we would rather help you pick than have a part come back.

PA12 nylon — the workhorse: strong, chemically resistant, natural grey or dyed black. Heat deflection 175 °C at 0.45 MPa, 95 °C at 1.82 MPa.
PA12S nylon — same family with a finer, more refined surface texture and tighter repeatability; black or greyish white
PA11 nylon — tougher, better impact and chemical resistance, heat deflection ~185 °C at 0.45 MPa; ideal for snap-fits and sporting goods
Full-colour nylon — smooth, very high detail and true colour, but only ~80 °C heat resistance and accepts 3MF or OBJ files only

What people print with MJF Nylon

A cross-section of the work that lands in this lane.

End-use housings, covers and enclosures in small production runs
Snap-fit assemblies, clips and living hinges that have to flex repeatedly
Air ducting, manifolds and internal-channel parts
Drone, robotics and automotive mounting brackets
Jigs, fixtures and gauges for a production line
Lattice and lightweighted structures that no other process can build
Bridge production of 10–500 parts before committing to injection tooling

Where it wins, and where it does not

Every process trades something away. Read the right-hand column before you commit a design — it is the part most services leave out.

Advantages

Why this lane gets picked

  • No support structures at all — geometry is genuinely free, including interlocking and captive parts
  • Mechanical properties are close to consistent in every direction, unlike FDM
  • Highly repeatable batch to batch, which is what makes it viable for real production
  • Best strength-per-rupee of any industrial lane we offer
  • Fine feature resolution at 0.08 mm layers, with crisp lettering and thin ribs
  • Parts nest densely in the build, so ordering a batch is disproportionately cheaper than ordering one

Limitations to design around

Told straight, before you order

  • Colour is limited. Standard parts arrive natural grey, or dyed through-black. There is no broad colour palette — the full-colour grade exists but is markedly weaker and only rated to about 80 °C.
  • The surface is slightly grainy and mildly porous. It feels good in the hand but it is not a cosmetic gloss finish, and it will pick up stains and oils unless sealed or painted.
  • Nylon absorbs atmospheric moisture, which shifts dimensions slightly and softens the part over time in humid conditions.
  • Fully enclosed hollows trap unfused powder. Design in escape holes of at least 2.5 mm, or expect the part to arrive heavier and rattling.
  • Sharp external corners round off very slightly at this layer thickness.
  • The 175 °C figure is heat deflection at low load. Under real mechanical stress PA12 is good to about 95 °C — design to that number, not the headline one.

MJF Nylon questions, answered

Do MJF parts need support structures?
No. The surrounding bed of unfused powder holds everything up, so interlocking assemblies, internal channels and lattices come out clean — and there are no witness marks anywhere on the part.
What colours can I get?
Natural grey as standard, or dyed through-black. There is no broad colour palette in this lane. A full-colour nylon grade exists with very high detail and true colour, but it is markedly weaker and only rated to about 80 °C.
How strong is MJF nylon, and how much heat will it take?
PA12 runs about 48 MPa tensile strength with 15–20% elongation at break. Its heat deflection is 175 °C at 0.45 MPa but 95 °C at 1.82 MPa — design to the 95 °C number, not the headline one, because a part under real mechanical stress follows the loaded figure.
What is the maximum part size?
370 × 276 × 360 mm, with a minimum of 5 × 5 × 5 mm. Tolerance is ±0.3 mm on features under 100 mm and ±0.4% above that.
Do I need to design in escape holes?
Yes, for any fully enclosed hollow. Unfused powder gets trapped inside, so add escape holes of at least 2.5 mm — otherwise the part arrives heavier than expected and rattling.
Is it cheaper to order a batch?
Disproportionately so. Parts nest densely in the build, so ten parts cost far less than ten times one part. MJF is the lane we point people to for bridge production of roughly 10–500 parts before committing to injection tooling.
How long does an MJF order take?
15–20 days, produced on Zbotic's industrial line and delivered pan-India.
