ArduPilot is the world’s most trusted open-source autopilot software, powering everything from hobby drones to commercial survey aircraft. Combined with Mission Planner, you can plan autonomous missions, set geo-fences, and monitor telemetry in real time. This guide covers everything an Indian drone builder needs.
Introduction to ArduPilot Ecosystem
ArduPilot supports multiple vehicle types: ArduCopter (multirotors), ArduPlane (fixed-wing and VTOLs), ArduRover (ground vehicles), and ArduSub (underwater ROVs). The ecosystem is mature with over 15 years of development, used by hobbyists, researchers, and commercial operators in India for agriculture, surveying, and inspection.
ArduPilot runs on Pixhawk series, Cube, and Holybro boards. It requires more setup than Betaflight but offers vastly more autonomous capabilities.
Installing Mission Planner Software
Mission Planner is a Windows-based ground control station (GCS). For Mac/Linux, QGroundControl is recommended.
- Download from the official ArduPilot site
- Install the .msi package
- Connect to internet for firmware downloads and map tile caching
Indian users should cache map tiles before heading to field locations where internet may be spotty.
Connecting Your Flight Controller
Connect via USB or telemetry radio:
- USB: Direct connection, 115200 baud
- Telemetry radio: SiK radios (433MHz for India), 57600 baud
- Bluetooth: Some boards support BLE
Once connected, Mission Planner displays a dashboard with artificial horizon, GPS status, battery voltage, and flight mode.
Calibrating Sensors and Radio
Careful calibration required before first flight:
- Accelerometer: Place drone on each face when prompted
- Compass: Rotate drone in 3D space outdoors, away from metal
- Radio: Move all sticks and switches to extremes
- ESC: Calibrate for full throttle range
- Battery monitor: Set voltage divider and current sensor values
India note: Magnetic declination varies across the country. ArduPilot auto-detects from GPS, but calibrate compass at your flying location.

Creating Your First Waypoint Mission
Creating waypoint missions:
- Switch to Flight Plan tab
- Right-click map to add waypoints
- Set altitude for each waypoint (relative to home)
- Add commands: loiter, change speed, take photo
- Click Write WPs to upload to FC
For agricultural survey in India, use Auto WP → Survey (Grid) to generate grid patterns over fields with configurable overlap.
Safety Features and Geo-Fencing
ArduPilot safety features:
- Geo-fence: Cylindrical or polygonal boundaries. Drone RTHs if breached.
- Failsafe: Configurable for RC loss, low battery, GPS loss, EKF failure
- Rally points: Alternative landing locations
- Obstacle avoidance: Supports rangefinders and depth cameras
For Indian commercial operations, set conservative geo-fences within VLOS limits per DGCA rules.

Tuning ArduPilot for Stable Flight
ArduPilot AutoTune makes PID tuning easy:
- Fly stably in Stabilize mode first
- Switch to AutoTune mode via transmitter switch
- Drone performs twitching manoeuvres on each axis (5-10 min/axis)
- Land — new PIDs saved automatically
Fly in calm conditions. Early morning in India works best, before thermals develop.
Recommended Hardware for ArduPilot
Recommended hardware for ArduPilot in India:
- Flight controllers: Holybro Pixhawk 6C/6X, CubePilot Orange/Black, Matek H743-Wing
- GPS: Holybro M9N/M10, CubePilot Here3+, uBlox M9N
- Telemetry: SiK 433MHz radios, WiFi modules
- Frames: S500 for beginners, Holybro S500 V2 for turnkey, custom carbon fibre for heavy lift

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ArduPilot legal in India?
The software is legal. Register your drone and obtain DGCA permits via DigitalSky before flying.
Can ArduPilot run on Betaflight FCs?
Some have ports, but dedicated Pixhawk boards are strongly recommended.
Maximum range for waypoint missions?
Depends on RC/telemetry link. SiK 433MHz: 1-2km. Always comply with DGCA VLOS rules.
ArduPilot vs DJI for commercial?
ArduPilot is more customisable and open-source, allowing custom payloads. DJI is easier out of the box.
