Temperature & Humidity Sensor (SHT20)
Description
The Sensirion SHT20 series is commonly utilized for humidity and temperature sensing. Humidity is gauged with a capacitive sensor, and temperature with a band-gap sensor. The SHT2x sensors include a version 4 silicon chip, featuring an amplifier, A/D converter, OTP memory, and a digital interface. Encased in a plastic package that exposes the sensor area, they are shielded from external impacts, ensuring durability. Suitable for both high and low volume needs (SHT20 – Low cost, SHT21 – Standard, SHT25 – High Accuracy), these sensors are fully calibrated and provide digital output of the final measurements.
Measurement parameters for the Sensiron SHT20 sensor.
-
Temperature range: -40 to 125 C(-40 to 257 F)
-
Humidity range: 0 to 100 % RH
-
Temperature accuracy: ± 0.5% C
-
Humidity accuracy: ± 5% RH
-
Interface: I2C
-
Voltage range: 2.1 – 3.6 V
How to Connect
Only four pins are required for connection: one for VCC, one for GND, and two for the I2C communication data lines. The SDA and SCL should be connected directly to the corresponding SDA and SCL breakout pins on the Arduino headers.
the 4 pins on the module:
-
VCC: Module power supply – connect to 3.3v pin on the yellow-coloured header.
-
GND: Ground – connect to a ground pin on the yellow-coloured header.
-
SDA: Serial Data Input/Output for the I2C protocol – connect to SDA socket on the yellow-coloured header.
-
SCL: Serial Clock Input for I2C the protocol – connect to SCL socket on the yellow- coloured header
While the Arduino operates with 5V logic levels, the SHT-20 sensor board requires 3.3V. It is crucial to power the board from the 3.3V pin. Since I2C is an open-drain signal, it can function without electronic level shifters for signal conversion. In practice, the SHT-20’s 3.3V signals are sufficient to communicate with the Arduino and are within the device’s tolerance. However, this is not the recommended practice, and for permanent circuits, voltage-compatible I2C buses or level converters should be used. Nevertheless, this workaround has been stable enough for prototyping purposes with this device.

Frequently Asked Questions
What supply voltage is required for the SHT20?
The SHT20 operates from 2.1 V to 3.6 V DC. For stable readings, a 3.3 V supply is commonly used in microcontroller projects.
How do I read temperature and humidity from the sensor?
Communicate with the SHT20 over I2C at address 0x40. Send the “measure temperature” or “measure humidity” command, then read two data bytes and one checksum byte. Apply the conversion formulas in the datasheet for final values.
Do I need to calibrate the SHT20 before use?
No additional calibration is required. The SHT20 is factory calibrated and stored in OTP memory, guaranteeing accuracy of ±0.5 °C and ±5 % RH out of the box.
