If you’re looking to navigate distances with a drone, a GPS module is essential. GPS drones use these modules to determine their location relative to orbiting satellites, enabling functions like position hold, autonomous flight, return to home, and waypoint navigation.
The Neo 7M GPS module, which includes an HMC5883L, is a high-sensitivity, low-power module with 56 channels and precise position updates at 10Hz. It comes with a molded plastic case for protection, making it ideal for aircraft or quadcopters.
This module features an active circuitry ceramic patch antenna, providing superior GPS signals compared to older Neo 6 series modules. It also includes a rechargeable backup battery for hot starts and an I²C EEPROM for storing configuration settings. Out of the box, it runs at 38400 Baud and is compatible with APM/Pixhawk systems. The package includes two cables: a 6-pin connector for the GPS module and a 4-pin connector for the I²C compass.
Note:
- APM 2.5 and APM 2.0 have an internal compass (unlike APM 2.6) which must be disabled by cutting a trace before you can connect the 3DR GPS + Compass module (the video here shows how).
- Other than disabling the internal compass, connecting them is the same for APM2.0/APM2.5 as for APM2.6.
