A piezoelectric transducer is a device that converts mechanical force into electrical output. It is made of quartz crystal, which contains SiO2. Piezoelectric crystals have no net electric charge. The atoms inside the crystals are arranged in an asymmetrical way, but their electric charges cancel out.
When a force is applied to stretch or bend the crystal, an electric voltage is generated. When there is no force, no voltage is produced. When there is a force, positive charges appear on one side of the crystal and negative charges on the opposite side. The crystal compresses as the force is applied.
