Description:
The MAX7219 4-in-1 Dot Matrix Display Module is an integrated serial input/output common-cathode display driver that connects a microprocessor to an 8-digit 7-segment digital LED display. It can also interface with bar graph displays or 64 individual LEDs.
The module includes:
- BCD encoder chip
- Multi-channel scanning loop for segment drivers
- Static RAM (8×8) for data storage
- Requires only one external register to set the segment current for each LED
Each module features an 8×8 LED matrix, controlled by the MAX7219 driver for creating dynamic patterns. Its major advantage is the ability to control all 64 LEDs using just 3 output wires from microcontrollers like Arduino.
The module uses a 4-wire serial interface, compatible with most microprocessors. Data can be addressed individually without refreshing all displays during updates. The MAX7219 also provides:
- Low-power shutdown mode (150μA)
- Analog and digital brightness control
- Scan limit register for displaying 1–8 bits of data
- Test mode that illuminates all LEDs

Wiring Instructions:
- Left side → Input port
- Right side → Output port
- For single module: connect input port to CPU
- For multiple cascaded modules:
- Connect CPU to first module input
- Output of first module → Input of second
- Output of second → Input of third, and so on

- GND → GND
- DIN → P2.2
- CS → P2.1
- CLK → P2.0
