DS1302 Real Time Clock Module (No Battery)
DS1302 is a trickle charge clock chip launched by DALLAS company. It contains a real-time clock/calendar and 31 bytes of static RAM. It communicates with a single-chip microcomputer through a simple serial interface. The real-time clock/calendar circuit provides information on seconds, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. It can automatically adjust the number of days in the month and leap year. The clock operation mode is determined by the AM/PM instruction, which allows for a 24 or 12-hour format.
DS1302 and single-chip microcomputer can use a synchronous serial communication method with only three lines:
(1) RST: reset line
(2) I/O: data line
(3) SCLK: serial clock.
Clock/RAM data can be read or written as a byte character or as a communication of up to 31 bytes. DS1302 has a very low power consumption and can maintain the data and clock information with less than 1mW of power.
Wiring method (to provide procedures, for example, can pick up any IO port, in the procedure to modify the port definitions :
VCC: 5V/3.3V
GND: GND
CLK: P02
DAT: P01
RST: P00
Note:
1.VCC and GND do not reverse, so as not to burn the chip
2.51 SCM P0 port to receive a pull-up resistor, if your computer is not connected pull-up resistor, the data can be the string to the other port.
Features:
- The real-time clock counts minutes, seconds, date, hours, month day of the week, year and leap-year compensation up to 2100.

DS1302 Real Time Clock Module Overview
The DS1302 Real Time Clock Module (No Battery) houses the DS1302 trickle-charge clock chip, offering a full real-time clock/calendar and 31 bytes of static RAM. It communicates via a simple three-wire serial interface (RST, I/O, SCLK) and delivers seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year data, automatically handling month lengths and leap years.
Key Features of DS1302 Real Time Clock Module
- Real-time clock/calendar: tracks seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year
- 31 bytes of static RAM for user data storage
- Simple three-wire serial interface (RST, I/O, SCLK) for easy microcontroller integration
- Selectable 12-hour (AM/PM) or 24-hour timekeeping mode
- Automatic adjustment for month lengths and leap years
- Module ships without a backup battery—install your own CR2032 cell for power-fail protection
- Genuine DS1302 chip—fast shipping from Zbotic
Applications and Use Cases
- Microcontroller-based data loggers requiring accurate timestamps
- Real-time clocks in embedded display projects
- Home automation systems for scheduled events
- Alarm clock or timer applications
- Power-failure backup timekeeping when battery is installed
- Timestamping sensor measurements for IoT prototypes
How to Use DS1302 Real Time Clock Module
Begin by wiring VCC to your 5V supply (or within 2–5.5V range), GND to ground, RST to your microcontroller’s reset/data pin, I/O to the data pin, and SCLK to a clock line. In your code, implement simple bit-banged routines to write and read time registers in byte format. For continuous timekeeping during power loss, solder in a CR2032 coin cell into the onboard battery holder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this module include a backup battery?
No. The “No Battery” version does not ship with a coin cell. To enable battery backup, install a CR2032 battery in the onboard holder.
Q: Which voltage levels does the DS1302 support?
The DS1302 operates from 2.0V to 5.5V. For most Arduino and 5V systems, connect VCC to 5V. It may also work at 3.3V but ensure signal compatibility.
Q: Will the DS1302 auto-adjust for leap years?
Yes. The DS1302’s internal calendar automatically accounts for different month lengths and leap years, so no manual adjustment is needed at February 29.
