USB Charger Doctor (Voltmeter Ammeter)
Help! This patient is overheating! Is the voltage too low? Is the current draw too high? Do we have a doctor here? Oh, what a relief, the USB Charger Doctor (Voltmeter Ammeter) has arrived! Just in time…Doctor, can you measure the current draw for us? And the voltage? With the Doctor’s help, you can monitor and maintain your USB-powered projects.
The USB Charger Doctor is a device that measures the working voltage and current output of any USB port and project. It is a blue plastic device that connects between a USB device and passes the data lines through. It has a 0.05-ohm resistor in line with the power pin that is used to measure current draw.
The Doctor’s digital display shows the numbers for testing devices such as chargers, cables, and cell phones.
You can use this device with an input voltage of 3.5-7VDC (although most USB devices tend to be around 4.75 to 5.25) and up to 3A of current. It alternates between voltage and current readings every 3 seconds or so. It is a very useful tool for testing USB devices, checking load levels and debugging battery chargers and boost converters. It is bigger but more informative than our USB Power Gauge Mini-Kit. It is also not open source so check out the USB Power Gauge mini kit if you want to customize your own power gauge indicator.
