Shift Register IC – SN74HC595N
The SN74HC595N is a simple 8-bit shift register integrated circuit (IC). This shift register acts as a conduit between a microcontroller and additional inputs or outputs, converting data from parallel to serial formats and vice versa.
The microprocessor you are using communicates with the SN74HC595N via serial data. This data is then converted to gather or output information in a parallel format across multiple pins. In short, it takes 8 bits of serial input and allocates them to 8 separate pins.
Housed in a compact Dual In-line Package (DIP), this IC comprises an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register that feeds into an 8-bit D-type storage register with parallel 3-state outputs.
Note: This is a drop-in replacement for the 74HC595 shift register IC and should function just fine in any application the previous version could.
