Tropical fish thrive at 24-28°C, but Indian summers can push aquarium water above 32°C — stressful or lethal for many species. An aquarium chiller using a Peltier module provides affordable, quiet cooling for tanks up to 50 litres. This guide covers building a thermoelectric aquarium chiller for Indian fishkeepers.

Why Aquariums Need Chillers

Most popular aquarium fish (neon tetras, angelfish, discus, shrimp) have optimal ranges of 24-28°C. Above 30°C, dissolved oxygen drops, metabolic stress increases, and disease susceptibility rises. Commercial aquarium chillers cost ₹8,000-30,000. A DIY Peltier chiller costs under ₹3,000.

How Peltier Aquarium Chillers Work

Aquarium water flows through a heat exchanger mounted on the cold side of a Peltier module. The TEC pumps heat from the water to its hot side, where a large heat sink and fan dissipate it to the room. A submersible pump circulates water from the tank through the chiller and back.

Components for the Build

  • TEC1-12706 Peltier module
  • Aluminium water block or copper tube heat exchanger (cold side)
  • Large heat sink 80×80mm+ with 80mm fan (hot side)
  • 5V submersible pump (₹100) for water circulation
  • DS18B20 waterproof sensor (₹58) for water temperature
  • Arduino + relay for on/off control
  • 12V 10A power supply
  • Silicone tubing (6mm ID, food-safe)

Building the Chiller Unit

The simplest heat exchanger: coil 1-2 metres of copper tubing (6mm OD) around the cold-side heat sink. Water flows through the coil, absorbing cold from the heat sink. Solder the coil to the heat sink or use thermal paste and cable ties for contact.

For better performance, use a proper aluminium water block (CPU water cooling blocks work well) mounted directly on the Peltier cold side. The pump pushes aquarium water through the block.

Temperature Controller Circuit

The Arduino reads the DS18B20 sensor in the aquarium and controls the Peltier module via relay. Set point: 26°C with 1°C hysteresis. Chiller activates above 27°C, deactivates at 26°C. The pump runs continuously when the chiller is on.

Flow Rate and Heat Exchange

A single TEC1-12706 can cool approximately 20-30 litres by 3-5°C below ambient. For larger tanks (50-100L), use two modules in parallel. The pump should flow at least 2-3 litres per minute for adequate heat exchange. A slow flow rate means water sits too long in the chiller and can over-cool locally while the bulk tank stays warm.

Maintenance and Fish Safety

  • Use food-safe/aquarium-safe tubing and fittings only
  • Never let copper contact the aquarium water directly if you keep invertebrates (shrimp, snails) — copper is toxic to them. Use aluminium or stainless steel heat exchangers.
  • Ensure no electrical connections can contact water
  • Clean the heat exchanger monthly to prevent algae buildup
  • Monitor water temperature continuously — a stuck-on chiller can over-cool and harm fish

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can a Peltier chiller cool an aquarium?

A single TEC1-12706 cools 20-30 litres by 3-5°C below ambient. For a 50-litre tank in 40°C Indian summer, this brings water to 35-37°C — still warm. Two modules bring it to 32-34°C. For achieving 26°C from 40°C ambient, you need a compressor-based chiller or a larger Peltier setup.

Is a Peltier chiller enough for Indian summers?

For small tanks (under 30L) in AC rooms, yes. For larger tanks or non-AC rooms at 40°C+, a Peltier chiller provides partial relief but may not reach optimal fish temperatures. Add ice bottles as supplementary cooling.

Is copper safe for aquariums?

Copper is toxic to invertebrates (shrimp, snails, corals) but tolerated by most fish at low levels. If you keep invertebrates, use stainless steel or aluminium heat exchangers instead of copper.

How much does a DIY aquarium chiller cost?

₹2,000-3,000 including Peltier module, heat sinks, pump, sensor, and Arduino. Commercial aquarium chillers cost ₹8,000-30,000 for comparable cooling capacity.

Can I use a fan instead of a chiller?

A fan blowing across the water surface provides 2-3°C of evaporative cooling. This is the cheapest option and works for mild overheating. It does increase water evaporation and humidity.
