TJA1050 High-Speed CAN Transceiver
The TJA1050 serves as the interface between the CAN protocol controller and the physical bus, offering differential transmit and receive capabilities. It succeeds the PCA82C250 high-speed CAN transceiver, boasting significant improvements such as substantially reduced Electromagnetic Emission (EME) through the optimal matching of CANH and CANL output signals and enhanced performance when nodes are unpowered.
Designed primarily for high-speed automotive applications, the TJA1050 operates at baud rates ranging from 40 to 1 Mbaud. It is fully compliant with the ISO 11898 standard. The device features a current-limiting circuit that safeguards the transmitter output stage from damage due to short-circuits to the battery voltage, and a thermal protection circuit that deactivates the transmitter if the junction temperature surpasses approximately 165 °C, thus reducing the IC’s power dissipation and temperature. However, all other IC functions remain operational, with the transmitter’s off-state resetting once TXD goes HIGH. This thermal protection is crucial during bus line short-circuits. Additionally, the CANH and CANL lines are fortified against automotive electrical transients as per ISO 7637 and can withstand Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) up to 4 kV.
