LiPo Battery Basics: Understanding Cell Counts

LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries are made up of individual cells wired in series. Each cell has a nominal voltage of 3.7V and a fully charged voltage of 4.2V.

  • 4S LiPo: 4 cells in series → 14.8V nominal → 16.8V fully charged
  • 6S LiPo: 6 cells in series → 22.2V nominal → 25.2V fully charged

The “S” number is the most important spec to match between your battery and your motor/ESC combination. Running the wrong voltage through your components can destroy motors and ESCs instantly.

Beyond the S count, you also need to understand:

  • mAh (milliamp hours): Capacity. Higher = longer flight time but more weight.
  • C rating: Maximum continuous discharge rate. A 1500mAh 100C battery can deliver 150A continuously.
  • Weight: 6S packs of equivalent capacity are heavier than 4S packs.

Voltage Comparison: 4S vs 6S Numbers

Parameter 4S LiPo 6S LiPo
Nominal voltage 14.8V 22.2V
Fully charged voltage 16.8V 25.2V
Voltage sag under load More noticeable Less noticeable
Number of cells to balance 4 6
Typical 5″ pack weight (1300–1500mAh) 160–195g 200–250g
Pack cost (India, approximate) ₹1,800–₹3,000 ₹2,500–₹4,500

Performance Differences on the Drone

Power Delivery

The higher voltage of a 6S pack means that for the same current draw, a 6S motor generates more power. This is because power equals voltage multiplied by current (P = V × I). A 6S motor drawing 20A generates 444W of power, while a 4S motor drawing the same 20A generates only 296W. This is why 6S builds feel more powerful and punchy in the air.

Efficiency

6S is more electrically efficient for a given thrust output because the same power can be achieved at lower current. Lower current means less heat in the ESC and motor windings, and less voltage sag from battery internal resistance. 6S builds generally run cooler and with more consistent thrust throughout the pack’s discharge cycle.

Throttle Response

6S builds feel more responsive because a small change in motor command translates to a larger change in actual power output. This is why 6S is very popular with experienced pilots who want precise, hair-trigger throttle control. Beginners often find 6S too aggressive initially.

Voltage Sag

Indian summer conditions (35–45°C ambient temperatures) accelerate battery ageing. 6S packs sag less under load because they operate at a higher voltage where the internal resistance’s effect is proportionally smaller. This is a real-world advantage during peak summer flying in Indian cities.

Motor Selection for 4S vs 6S

Motor KV (RPM per volt) must be matched to battery voltage. Higher voltage needs lower KV to keep motor RPM in the efficient operating range for your prop size.

ESC Requirements

Your ESC must be rated for the voltage you are running. A 4S-only ESC will fail immediately on 6S. Check the maximum input voltage rating before purchasing:

  • 4S max: ESCs rated to 4S or 17V continuous (look for “2–4S” specification)
  • 6S compatible: ESCs rated to 6S or 26V continuous (look for “2–6S” specification)

A 4-in-1 ESC rated to 5S is NOT safe for 6S — the fully charged 6S pack voltage of 25.2V will exceed its rating. Always verify the maximum voltage specification in the ESC datasheet.

Weight and Handling Differences

A 6S 1300mAh LiPo pack weighs approximately 200–230g. A comparable 4S 1500mAh pack weighs 175–200g. That 30–50g difference is significant on a 5-inch build that typically weighs 550–750g all-up. Here is how it affects handling:

4S Handling

  • Lighter overall weight = more agile in tight spaces
  • More forgiving on crashes (less inertia)
  • Popular for micro racing courses and indoor flying
  • Better for beginners — more room to correct mistakes

6S Handling

  • Heavier but more stable in wind (better wind penetration)
  • More planted feel on high-speed passes
  • Preferred for outdoor racing in variable wind conditions
  • Better for larger 7-inch and long-range builds where stability matters more than agility

India’s monsoon season (June–September) brings gusty, variable winds that favour 6S builds. During calm winter conditions in December–February, 4S builds feel more playful and responsive.

Cost Comparison in India

Cost is a real factor for Indian hobbyists. Here is an honest breakdown:

Cost Factor 4S Advantage 6S Advantage
Battery cost per packCheaper (₹1,800–₹3,000)—
Motor costSlightly cheaper for equiv perf—
ESC costCheaper (more options)—
Battery lifespan—Longer (lower current stress)
Flight efficiency—More efficient per minute of flight
Component replacementCheaper per crash—

For a first build with a tight budget, 4S wins on upfront cost. If you plan to fly regularly for years and want the best long-term value, 6S is actually more cost-effective due to battery longevity and efficiency gains.

Charging and Storage Safety

Regardless of whether you choose 4S or 6S, LiPo safety rules are non-negotiable in India:

  • Never charge unattended — LiPo fires start fast and spread to everything around them.
  • Charge at 1C rate — A 1500mAh battery charges at 1.5A for safe, slow charging. Fast charging at 2C or 3C is possible with quality chargers but reduces pack lifespan.
  • Store at 3.85V per cell (not 4.2V fully charged). This is called storage voltage and dramatically extends LiPo lifespan.
  • Use a LiPo safe bag for charging and storage. These are inexpensive and can contain a LiPo fire.
  • India heat warning: Never leave a LiPo pack in a car during summer. Temperatures inside parked cars can reach 60–70°C, which can cause thermal runaway in already-charged LiPo packs.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose 4S if:

  • You are building your first FPV drone
  • Budget is the primary constraint (under ₹8,000 total build)
  • You plan to fly mostly indoors or in calm conditions
  • You prefer an agile, nimble feel
  • You want a larger component selection (more 4S parts available locally)

Choose 6S if:

  • You have flying experience and want maximum performance
  • You fly outdoors frequently in variable wind conditions
  • You are building a 7-inch or larger long-range platform
  • You want the best long-term efficiency and battery longevity
  • You are building an agricultural or commercial drone (6S+ is standard here)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use a 6S battery on a 4S motor/ESC setup?

Absolutely not. A 6S pack (up to 25.2V fully charged) on a 4S-rated ESC (typically rated to 17V) will immediately destroy the ESC and possibly the motor. Always match your pack cell count to your component voltage rating.

Q: Is 6S harder to fly for beginners?

6S is generally more aggressive and less forgiving for beginners due to the higher power output and snappier throttle response. Most FPV coaches recommend starting on 4S and upgrading to 6S once you have solid Acro mode fundamentals.

Q: Are 6S LiPo batteries available easily in India?

Quality 6S packs are available from brands like Tattu, Gaoneng, and CNHL through Indian drone hobby stores including Zbotic. They are slightly less common than 4S packs locally but not difficult to source. Expect to pay ₹2,500–₹4,500 for a quality 6S 1300mAh racing pack.

Q: What about 4S vs 6S for agricultural drones?

Agricultural drones almost universally run 6S, 12S, or even 14S to power the large, high-efficiency motors needed for lifting 10–20L of liquid payload. The efficiency and low-current advantages of higher voltage are critical when you need to fly for extended periods with heavy loads.

Q: Can I use the same charger for 4S and 6S packs?

Yes, most multi-chemistry balance chargers (like the ISDT Q6, ToolkitRC M6, or IMAX B6 and clones) support 1S through 6S LiPo charging. Just ensure you select the correct cell count (4S or 6S) in the charger menu before charging — selecting the wrong count can overcharge or undercharge cells and damage the pack.

Conclusion

The 4S vs 6S debate does not have a single correct answer — it depends on your specific build, flying style, budget, and experience level. For Indian beginners building their first FPV drone on a budget, 4S is the practical choice: more affordable, more forgiving, and with a wider selection of compatible components. For experienced pilots building a performance machine or a commercial/agricultural drone, 6S offers real efficiency, power, and longevity advantages that justify the higher upfront cost.
