The Stainless Steel 1m Conductive Thread Wire for Wearable Lilypad (Pack of 5) offers an innovative solution for integrating electronics into fabrics. This thread can conduct both power and signals, enabling garments to incorporate electronic functionality. While it’s less conductive than traditional PCB traces, it provides an effective way to create ‘wearable’ electronics.
Made from high-quality stainless steel, this thread is highly resistant to tarnishing, ensuring durability. It is a 2-ply thread, with a thickness suitable for some sewing machines. The thread has a resistance of approximately 6 Ohms per foot and weighs around 0.15g per foot. Each spool contains about 360 yards of stainless steel fiber, offering ample material for wearable electronics projects.
This economical spool is a great entry point for experimenting with e-textiles, providing enough thread to explore designs without wasting materials. Unlike other conductive threads, it is made from stainless steel fibers, not silver-plated, and it doesn’t have a Nylon core.
While soldering this thread can be more challenging due to its stainless steel composition, it is resilient to heat and won’t be damaged by a soldering iron. The thread’s ‘hairy’ texture can be tricky for fine, detailed work compared to smoother threads. To help with hand sewing, we recommend waxing the thread to reduce friction.
For machine sewing, waxing isn’t always an option, so it’s best to avoid sewing tight connections, as the thread’s textured surface may cause short circuits in close proximity.
