Most eBikes today use either a brushless motor or a brushed motor. A brushless motor changes the current with a controller and sensors. The controller monitors the motor’s position and chooses which two of the three motor phases to send current through to keep it spinning.
A brushed motor has two wires and does not require any sophisticated control. You can connect it directly to a battery and it will run. The drawback is that the brushes eventually wear out and they also lose energy. Therefore, brushes are a crucial component of the motor.
