Ky-039 Module – Description:
The KY-039 Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module utilizes a bright infrared (IR) LED and a phototransistor to detect the pulse of the finger, indicated by a flashing red LED with each heartbeat.
The IR LED emits light on one side of the finger, while the phototransistor detects the light flux on the opposite side. When the finger experiences a blood pressure pulse, the resistance of the phototransistor undergoes slight changes.
To ensure sensitivity, a high resistance resistor (R1) is selected, as most of the light passing through the finger is absorbed. The resistance value can be adjusted through experimentation to optimize sensor performance. Shielding against stray light is crucial to prevent interference.
In home environments, this shielding is particularly important due to fluctuations in household lighting, typically at 50Hz or 60Hz. Without proper shielding, faint heartbeat signals may be obscured by significant noise.
Note: HW-487 on module working remains same.
Example Code:
// Pulse Monitor Test Script
int sensor Pin = 0;
double alpha = 0.75;
int period = 100;
double change = 0.0;
double minval = 0.0;
void setup ()
{
Serial.begin (9600);
}
void loop ()
{
static double oldValue = 0;
static double oldChange = 0;int rawValue = analogRead (sensorPin);
double value = alpha * oldValue (1 – alpha) * rawValue;Serial.print (rawValue);
Serial.print (“,”);
Serial.println (value);
oldValue = value;delay (period);
}

KY-039 Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module Overview
The KY-039 Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module is a compact pulse detection board that uses an infrared LED and a phototransistor to sense blood flow variations in a fingertip. It provides a flashing red LED indicator synchronized with each heartbeat, making it ideal for integration into wearable health monitors and DIY biomedical projects.
Key Features of KY-039 Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module
- Infrared LED emitter paired with a phototransistor detector for precise pulse sensing
- Onboard high-value resistor (R1) preconfigured for optimal sensitivity to blood flow changes
- Flashing red LED provides real-time visual feedback of each heartbeat
- Compact PCB footprint for easy mounting in prototypes and enclosures
- Simple three-pin interface (VCC, GND, OUTPUT) compatible with 3.3–5V microcontrollers
- Available at Zbotic with fast shipping across India for rapid project deployment
Applications and Use Cases
- Integration into Arduino- or ESP32-based heart rate monitor projects
- Prototype wearable fitness trackers and pulse oximetry enclosures
- Biomedical teaching kits for demonstrating photoplethysmography
- Home-made vital sign monitors for hobbyist health dashboards
- Research prototypes requiring non-invasive real-time heartbeat detection
How to Use KY-039 Finger Detection Heartbeat Measuring Sensor Module
Connect VCC (3.3–5V) and GND to your development board, then wire the OUTPUT pin to an analog input. Place a fingertip gently over the LED/transistor window, and observe the red LED flash at each pulse. Read the analog signal in your code to calculate BPM or visualize the waveform, and adjust the onboard resistor if you need finer sensitivity for different finger sizes or lighting conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What supply voltage does the KY-039 module require?
The KY-039 operates on 3.3–5V DC, making it compatible with most Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi GPIO power pins.
How does the module indicate a detected heartbeat?
With each blood pulse in your finger, the phototransistor’s resistance changes and the onboard red LED flashes in sync, offering a clear visual heartbeat indicator.
Can I adjust the detection sensitivity on KY-039?
Yes—by swapping the onboard resistor R1 for a different value or installing a small trimmer potentiometer in its place, you can fine-tune the module’s response to various finger thicknesses and ambient light levels.
