Mosques, temples, gurdwaras, and churches across India use prayer time displays to inform their congregations of service timings. An automated system calculates prayer times based on geographical location and displays them alongside the current time. This guide covers building a prayer time display with automatic alerts suitable for any place of worship.

The Need for Automated Prayer Time Displays

  • Prayer times change daily based on solar position and location
  • Manual boards require daily updates and are prone to errors
  • Automated displays are always accurate with zero maintenance

Calculating Prayer Times Programmatically

Islamic prayer times are calculated from solar position. Libraries available:

  • PrayerTimes library: Arduino/ESP32 library that calculates Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha based on latitude, longitude, and calculation method

Building with ESP32 and LED Matrix

  • ESP32 fetches accurate time via NTP (WiFi)
  • PrayerTimes library calculates daily prayer schedule
  • Dot matrix displays scrolling prayer information
  • DS3231 RTC maintains time during WiFi outages

Automatic Adhan and Bell Alerts

  • DFPlayer Mini module plays audio files at prayer times
  • For mosques: Pre-recorded adhan in the desired recitation style
  • For temples: Bell or conch sound at puja times
  • Volume control via potentiometer
  • Option to disable audio and use visual alert only

Multi-City Support and Customisation

  • Location-based configuration: set latitude and longitude for accurate times
