21700 vs 18650: Which Lithium Cell to Choose

21700 vs 18650: Which Lithium Cell to Choose

The 21700 cell is the newer, bigger sibling of the 18650. Popularised by Tesla for the Model 3 battery pack, the 21700 offers more capacity in a slightly larger package. But does bigger always mean better for Indian makers and hobbyists? This comparison helps you decide.

Introduction to 21700 Cells

The 21700 cell measures 21mm in diameter and 70mm in length, giving it roughly 47% more volume than an 18650 (21mm vs 18mm diameter, 70mm vs 65mm length). This extra volume translates to higher capacity – typically 4000mAh to 5000mAh compared to the 18650’s 2200mAh to 3500mAh.

Samsung, LG, Molicel, and Panasonic all produce 21700 cells. Samsung’s 40T and 50E are popular choices, while the Molicel P42A is considered one of the best all-round 21700 cells available.

Size and Capacity Comparison

Parameter 18650 21700
Diameter 18mm 21mm
Length 65mm 70mm
Volume ~16.5 cm³ ~24.2 cm³
Weight 45-50g 60-70g
Typical Capacity 2200-3500mAh 4000-5000mAh
Energy Density ~250 Wh/kg ~270 Wh/kg

The 21700 delivers roughly 30-40% more capacity while being only 47% larger in volume, meaning it achieves a better energy density per unit volume. For E-bike builders, this means fewer cells to reach the same capacity.

Discharge Rate and Performance

Both form factors offer high-drain and high-capacity variants. The 21700 generally handles higher continuous discharge due to its larger internal surface area. A Samsung 40T (21700) handles 35A continuous, while the Samsung 25R (18650) tops out at 20A. For high-power applications like e-scooters and power tools, the 21700 has a clear advantage.

Cost Per Watt-Hour Analysis

In India, 18650 cells are significantly cheaper and more widely available. A Samsung 30Q (18650, 3000mAh) costs approximately ₹150-₹200, giving about 11Wh for roughly ₹15-₹18 per Wh. A Samsung 50E (21700, 5000mAh) costs approximately ₹300-₹400, giving about 18.5Wh for roughly ₹16-₹22 per Wh.

The cost per Wh is similar, but the 21700 requires fewer cells for the same pack capacity, reducing BMS complexity, nickel strip usage, and assembly time. For a 48V 20Ah e-bike pack, you need 91 cells (13S7P) with 18650 or 65 cells (13S5P) with 21700.

Compatibility and Availability in India

The 18650 ecosystem in India is far more mature. Holders, BMS boards, and chargers are easily available from ₹10 onwards. The 21700 form factor has fewer compatible accessories, and holders can be harder to source. If you are building a small project, the 18650’s ecosystem advantage matters.

Which Cell for Your Project

  • Choose 18650 if: You need easy sourcing, affordable holders/BMS, are building small packs (under 500Wh), or this is your first battery project.
  • Choose 21700 if: You need maximum energy density, are building large packs (E-bike/EV), require high continuous discharge, or want fewer cells to manage.

Making the Right Choice

For most Indian hobbyists and makers, the 18650 remains the practical choice in 2025-2026 due to better availability and lower entry cost. However, if you are building a serious e-bike or solar storage system, investing in 21700 cells pays off through fewer cells, simpler construction, and better energy density.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix 18650 and 21700 cells in one pack?

Absolutely not. Never mix different cell sizes, brands, or ages in a battery pack. All cells in a pack must be identical in chemistry, capacity, and age.

Are 21700 batteries available in India?

Yes, but with limited variety. You can find Samsung 50E and 40T 21700 cells from specialised electronics suppliers. Availability is improving as e-bike adoption grows in India.

Which is safer, 18650 or 21700?

Both formats have similar safety profiles when from reputable manufacturers. The 21700 is not inherently safer or more dangerous. Safety depends on cell quality, proper handling, and using appropriate BMS protection.
