What FDM is good at

FDM builds your part by laying down molten filament one track at a time, and it remains the best value in 3D printing for anything that has to be held, bolted, tested and revised. We run it in-house on Bambu Lab X1C and P1S machines with a 0.4 mm nozzle, so a quote comes back in seconds and the part dispatches in days. Material choice spans everyday PLA through to PETG, ABS, carbon-filled engineering filament and flexible TPU.

Limitations to design around

Told straight, before you order

  • Layer lines are always visible. If the part is going in front of a customer and has to look moulded, SLA resin is the better lane.
  • Strength is directional. A printed part is typically 40–60% weaker pulled apart across layers than along them, so orient the load in-plane or move to MJF/SLS nylon.
  • Overhangs need supports, and removing them leaves witness marks and slight roughness on down-facing surfaces.
  • PLA creeps and softens from about 55–60 °C. Sustained heat, direct sun or a warm enclosure calls for PETG, ABS or nylon.
  • Large flat ABS parts can warp or split at corners as they cool; splitting the design or switching material is often the fix.
  • FDM parts are not watertight by default — sealing needs deliberate wall thickness, full infill and often a coating.
  • Anything over 250 × 210 × 250 mm has to be split and bonded, or moved to an industrial lane.

FDM questions, answered

How accurate are your FDM parts?
Plan on ±0.3 mm, or ±0.5% on dimensions over 60 mm — whichever is larger. Holes print roughly 0.1–0.3 mm undersize, so ream them afterwards or model in clearance if you need a press fit.
What is the largest FDM part you can print?
250 × 210 × 250 mm. That is the measured usable envelope, and it is deliberately smaller than the nominal 256 mm bed. Anything larger has to be split and bonded, or moved to an industrial lane.
Which filament should I choose?
PLA is cheapest, stiffest and holds the best detail, but softens around 55–60 °C. PETG is tougher and usable to about 70 °C. ABS handles roughly 95 °C and bonds with glue or acetone. PLA-CF is much stiffer with a matte black finish, and TPU 95A is the flexible option.
How strong is an FDM part?
Strong, but directional. A printed part is typically 40–60% weaker when pulled apart across the layers than along them. Orient the part so loads run in-plane — or move to MJF or SLS nylon, where properties are close to consistent in every direction.
Are FDM parts watertight?
Not by default. Sealing needs deliberate wall thickness, full infill and often a coating. If the part must hold fluid or pressure, tell us at quote stage so we can advise on the right lane.
