Choosing the right power connector for your RC vehicle, drone, or battery pack is critical for safety and performance. The three most popular options — XT60, XT30, and Deans (T-Plug) — each have distinct advantages. This guide helps you pick the best one for your application.

Why Power Connectors Matter in RC

Power connectors carry the full current of your battery to your ESC and motors. A poor connector introduces resistance, which means wasted energy as heat, voltage sag under load, and in worst cases, melted plastic and fires. Choosing a connector rated for your current draw is non-negotiable.

XT60 Connector: The Industry Standard

The XT60 is the most widely used power connector in the drone and RC hobby. Designed by Amass, it features gold-plated bullet contacts, a nylon housing rated to 250 degrees Celsius, and a friction-fit design that holds firm under vibration.

  • Continuous current: 60A
  • Burst current: Up to 100A
  • Contact resistance: Less than 0.5 milliohms
  • Wire gauge: 10-14 AWG

The XT60H variant adds a plastic housing cover for better insulation and is required by many FPV racing leagues.

XT30 Connector: Compact Power

The XT30 is the miniature sibling of the XT60, designed for lower-current applications like micro quads, whoops, and lightweight robots.

  • Continuous current: 30A
  • Burst current: Up to 40A
  • Wire gauge: 16-20 AWG

XT30 connectors are popular on 2S and 3S micro drone builds where weight matters. They use the same gold-plated contact technology as XT60 but in a smaller package.

Deans T-Plug: The Classic Choice

Deans (T-Plug) connectors were the RC hobby standard before XT60 took over. They feature flat blade contacts rather than bullet pins.

  • Continuous current: 40-50A (genuine Deans Ultra)
  • Wire gauge: 12-16 AWG
  • Pros: Compact, flat profile, easy to solder
  • Cons: No anti-spark, easier to short-circuit when plugging in

Genuine Deans Ultra plugs are high quality, but the market is flooded with cheap clones that have higher resistance and looser fit.

XT60 vs XT30 vs Deans Comparison

Feature XT60 XT30 Deans
Continuous Current 60A 30A 40-50A
Contact Type Bullet Bullet Blade
Anti-Spark XT60S variant No No
Best For 5″ quads, 6S builds Micro quads, 2-3S Legacy RC cars
Price Range (India) ₹20-35/pair ₹17-25/pair ₹15-25/pair

Soldering Tips for Power Connectors

Soldering power connectors requires a high-wattage iron (60W minimum) and proper technique:

  1. Tin both the wire and the connector cup generously
  2. Use a third-hand tool or silicone holder to secure the connector
  3. Heat the connector cup, feed solder, then insert the wire
  4. Hold still for 3-5 seconds until the solder solidifies
  5. Apply heat shrink tubing over each terminal individually

Never solder both terminals of a connector while wires are connected to a battery. Always solder one polarity at a time and insulate before moving to the next.

Which Connector Should You Choose

For most Indian makers building 5-inch FPV drones or similar projects, XT60 is the default choice. Use XT30 for micro builds under 250g. Only use Deans if you are maintaining legacy equipment that already uses them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use XT30 on a 5-inch drone?

Not recommended. A 5-inch quad on 4S can draw 80-120A burst, which exceeds the XT30’s 30A continuous rating. Use XT60 instead.

Are XT60 and Deans interchangeable?

No, they have different physical shapes. You need an adapter cable or must re-solder connectors to switch between them.

What is the XT90 connector for?

XT90 handles 90A continuous and is used on large hexacopters, high-voltage 6S+ builds, and e-bike battery packs.

Does Zbotic sell genuine Amass connectors?

Yes, Zbotic.in stocks authentic Amass XT60, XT30, and XT90 connectors with gold-plated contacts.
